Why does Hokkaido have such amazing powder snow?

Here’s the secret of Hokkaido powder. The left side of Hokkaido faces the Sea of Japan, and because of the warm currents that flow through it, it is warm even in winter. Therefore, the air above the sea is full of water vapor, like in a bath.

When cold winds blow in from Siberia, rain clouds are created over the sea. These rain clouds are blown by the wind into the land of Hokkaido, and when they hit the high mountain slopes, it causes snow to fall. When these snow clouds come directly above Sapporo, which faces the Sea of Japan, snow is brought to the Sapporo area.

The Niseko area, which is home to the Niseko mountain range, also receives a large amount of snow. For example, the amount of snowfall during the season in Niseko reaches about 16 meters. The maximum snowfall in the 2021-2022 season was 450 cm in December, and there were more than 100 days of snow during the season. This means that you can ski on fresh powder almost every day!
